1980 HENRY STOMMEL

Dr. Henry Melson Stommel has had an illustrious scientific career in the field of physical oceanography, primarily in the interpretation of data associated with large scale ocean dynamics. His long standing interest in the Gulf Stream is illustrated by his recent book on the subject. He is being recognized for his significant contribution to the field of oceanography through active research, his publications, and his wealth of ideas which stimulated the work of many of his contemporaries. In recent years he has co-directed the large USSR-US POLYMODE research project on ocean eddies.
