1980 RAMON MARGALEF

Picture
Professor Ramon Margalef has received the A.G. Huntsman Award for his work in the field of biological oceanography. Professor Margalef is unique in his combination of theoretical and field studies of phytoplankton. He is being recognized for his phenomenal contribution in both these areas. Professor Margalef has devoted a life-time to studies on phytoplankton and fisheries in large oceanic upwellings, both off east and west continents (Peru, West Africa). Offsetting his interest in marine oceanic processes has been his involvement in phytoplankton studies of the numerous man-made lakes of Spain. These freshwater studies have generated perhaps the most thorough studies on artificial man-made lakes to date. Professor Margalef is equally well-known for his contributions to ecological theory. He has several books on the subject, both in English and Spanish. The Spanish textbook is held to be probably the world's best text in beginning ecology. He excels in oceanography for his contributions to both theoretical and experimental biological oceanography. His view and interpretation of ecological evidence invariably generate strikingly new ideas.
